Secured Credit Card UK

A secured credit card UK is a UK credit card that is secured by a deposit account funded and owned by the card holder but held by the card issuer. Unless incentives are provided, which are becoming more common for these cards, the card holder deposits anywhere from 10% to 200% of the credit desired. This deposit is held in a savings account until the card is closed. In which case it is returned if the cardholder is in good standing or used to offset the delinquent amount if cardholder is delinquent. This is a good choice of credit card if you are unable to obtain any other card due to bad credit or no credit history. Allowing you to build up your credit history.

Why do banks offer secured UK credit cards? Banks offer these cards to people at risk for not making their payments. Reasoning is that they have noticed card holders default less often if they have deposited money that they will lose. This allows the banks to offer credit cards to riskier card holders that the banks would normally not be able to offer cards to.

Worth noting is that the banks normally take reasonably actions with the deposit money. It is typically held in an account that earns interest. Also the banks wait until the card is seriously delinquent (150 days or more), basically in default, before accessing this money. Another point worth noting is that even if you deposit 100% of the available credit on your card, you may still owe money if you default. Reason for this is that late fees and interest will be added on which could push you over the card limit and the amount you deposited. Best approach is to make your payments on time and not default on your credit card.

UK secured credit card UK cards are typically issued from either Visa Credit Card UK or Mastercard credit card UK. Another option that one with no or bad credit may want to consider are prepaid UK credit cards.
